My loving daughters, the pillars of our family (Part 1)
When I came to Canada my wife and I wanted to have two children, ideally one boy and one girl. We figured we could not afford to raise more than two children, as we had busy lives as new immigrants with no one to help us at home. When my wife gave birth to our first child, a pretty baby girl named Caroline, I thought there was still an opportunity to have a boy. But that¡¯s not the way it worked out. Our second child, Alice, was a girl. Like a typical Korean father, I was a little disappointed that I would not have a son, since we had decided to stop having more children. However, that disappointment soon melted away.
As time went by, I found an ever-deepening love and joy in raising two daughters. It turned out to be a blessing having two lovely girls rather than a son. As children, Caroline and Alice relied on each other for help and played together as friends. They may not have gotten along so well if they were a boy and a girl. Our daughters were truly amazing and adorable to watch.
My wife Yonja and I were working full time, and raising two kids was an enormous task that required a great deal of physical and emotional sacrifice, especially during their growing-up stages. They were in daycare while we worked, and the evening hours were the only time we could spend together as a family. Yonja and I would be physically and mentally exhausted by the time we picked up our kids on the way home from work in the late afternoon. Spending time with young kids during the evenings and weekends was our main source of joy and happiness.
Expressing our love to our children came naturally to us, and we wanted them to feel unconditionally loved. We did our best to accommodate their interests and wishes, and allowed them to develop their own character. But we also wanted them to develop discipline and proper morals and values. We wanted to clearly define the difference between love and discipline.
At times we had to suppress our impulses to yield to unreasonable demands by our children. When we said ¡°no¡± to our kids, we wanted them to clearly understand it. We encouraged them to think and act creatively and independently, to develop self-esteem, and to respect people. We wanted them to have friends and feel like they belonged amongst their peers, but not to desire all the material possessions of their peers.
We as parents had to be conscious of what our kids were seeing and learning at home. We believed that the best way to teach our kids was by example, like the old saying, ¡°seeing is believing¡±. Yonja and I had to make a number of sacrifices and exhibit a lot of patience in order to provide the right example and accommodate our children¡¯s needs.
We also wanted to teach them the Korean language so they would have basic comprehension of their parents¡¯ mother tongue. So we enrolled them in Korean Language School for four years until they became too busy to continue due to their regular school life. However, the Korean school curriculum was more focused on written language rather than spoken. Given the amount of time we spent, my children¡¯s ability in speaking Korean was very limited.
In hindsight, we think we could have spent more time with our kids. But we were not perfect, and we did what we thought was best given the circumstances.
Academics were important but we did not pressure our kids too much about their marks. We were just grateful that they never caused any major troubles, and were growing up as good kids with integrity, loyalty to family, and a sense of responsibility – qualities that are essential for their futures.
Most Korean parents tend to choose the high school for their children to attend. Many parents want their children to attend a highly academic or private school. We wanted our children to make their own decision about which school to attend. Both Caroline and Alice chose regular public high schools, each to suit her own aspirations.
We wanted to teach our children the value of earning and saving money. They worked at fast food restaurants like A&W and McDonald¡¯s, to earn their spending money while they attended high school.
(To be continued)
