"Why are you crying?" he asked his Mom. "Because I'm a mother" she told him. "I don't understand," he said. His mom just hugged him to her and said, "You never will."
Later the little boy asked his father why Mother seemed to cry for no reason. "All mothers cry for no reason," was all his dad could say.
The little boy grew up and became a man, still wondering why mothers cry. One night, he had a dream. In his dream, he called God on the telephone.
When God came to the phone the man asked, "God, why do mothers cry so easily?"
God answered him, "My son, you see, when I made mothers, I know they had to be special. I made their shoulders strong enough to carry the weight of the world, yet gentle enough to give comfort.
I gave them an inner strength to endure childbirth and the rejection that many times come from their children and mates.
I gave them a hardiness that allows them to keep going when everyone else gives up, and to take care of their families through sickness and fatique without complaining.
I gave them the sensitivity to love their children under all circumstances, even when their child has hurt them very badly.
I gave them a tear to shed. It's theirs, exclusively, to use whenever needed.
It's their only weakness.
It is a tear for mankind.
엄마의 눈물
"엄마 왜 울어?" 어린 아이는 엄마에게 물었다. "응~ 엄마니까" "왜 우는데" 엄마는 아들을 꼭 껴안으며 "아들아 넌 평생 모를꺼야, 엄마가 왜 우는지를"
얼마후 아이는 아빠에게도 물었다. 왜 엄마가 이유없이 우는지를. "모든 엄마들이 이유없이 운단다" 아빠도 별 다른 설명없이 아이에게 말했다.
세월이 흘러 아이는 성인이 되었지만 왜 엄마들이 우는지를 늘 궁금해 하고 있었다.
그러던 어느날 그는 꿈을 꾸었다. 꿈속에서 하나님한테 전화를 했다. 하나님이 전화를 받자 그는 묻기를 "하나님, 왜 어머니들은 아무런 이유도 없이 쉽게 우시나요?"
하나님이 말하길 "아들아, 내가 어머니들을 만들때 그들이 아주 독특해야 한다고 알고 있었지. 그래서 난, 어머니들에게 세상의 짐을 짊어질 수 있도록 튼튼한 어깨를 줌과 동시에 포근한 위로를 해줄 수 있는 가냘픈 어깨도 주었단다.
난 어머니들에게 출산의 고통을 이기고, 그 아이들을 키우면서 받게되는 속상함과 거절감을 견뎌낼 수 있도록 강한 내면의 힘을 주었단다.
난 어머니들에게 식구들이 포기하고 좌절할때 용기와 위로를 주고, 가족들이 병들고 아플때 불평없이 돌볼 수 있는 강한 마음을 주었단다.
난 어머니들에게 자식들이 때로는 마음 아프게 하고 실망시킬지라도, 그 아이들을 끊임없이 사랑할 수 있는 따스한 감성을 주었단다.
난 어머니들에게 눈물을 주었는데, 눈물은 어머니들만이 소유한 독점적인 것이고 또 필요할땐 언제라도 그 눈물을 쓸 수 있게 했단다.
어머님의 눈물이란,
어머니들의 유일한 약한면임과 동시에, 인류를 위한 울음 이란다."
